Purpose of the Governing Body

Two of the most common questions asked are 'What is a Governor?' and 'What does the governing body do?'

Core purpose of the Governing Body

  • Determining the aims and values of the school;
  • Monitoring and reviewing the broad policies, plans and procedures within which the school operates;
  • Ensuring local accountability; and
  • Insisting that the best interests of all pupils are paramount in decision making.

General

The Governing Body must act fairly, be open and accountable; encourage open government and effective communication; fulfil the expectations of a good employer and consider carefully how each decision taken may affect other schools.

Each Governor has equal status and represents different interest groups, whose shared concern is the welfare of all pupils in the school.

The Headteacher is responsible for the day to day running of the school, the implementation of the curriculum and policies.

Commitment

Being a Governor involves commitment of significant amounts of time and energy, besides getting to know the school and become involved in school activities, each Governor is responsible for a curriculum area and is a member of a committee, Curriculum, Staffing, Finance or Premises.
